Cathy has extensive experience teaching piano at many fiddle camps across Canada. She loves to explore the chording possibilities with her students, and discovering the chord frameworks that are in each tune. So many people have said to her, “I can read music but I can’t chord!” Her response is, “Yes you can! Chording is just a different skill set than note reading!” Cathy enjoys unpacking the theory behind the chords, giving students tools that can be used in many different tunes. Cathy plays piano for a lot of events and dances in Saskatoon and throughout Saskatchewan with fiddlers such as Joseph Desjarlais, Gordon Stobbe, JJ Guy and Lucas Welsh. She is an organizer of the FiddlyNess Fiddle Camp at the Ness Creek Site in Northern Saskatchewan, as well as the Shivering Strings Saskatoon winter fiddle camp. She has recorded piano on two John Arcand CD’s and on Twin Fiddles 1. She was on the organizing committee that brought the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship to Saskatoon in 2013 - the first time the CGMFA’s were held outside of Ottawa. If you play the piano and are interested in learning how to accompany fiddlers, Cathy is the teacher for you.
