Shivering Strings Calgary 2021

About Shivering Strings

PictureGordon and JJ
The Shivering Strings weekend workshop is the brainchild of Gordon Stobbe.  These workshops or camps as they are frequently referred to, are conducted in Truro, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Calgary.  The shivering refers to our cold northern winters and the strings, well you can figure that one out.
About six weeks prior to the workshop, each instructor will submit one tune at each level; Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.  These tunes will be posted on the website in both sheet music and audio forms.
It is important that campers download the music as soon as it is available and become familiar with the tunes.  We will spend the time in class perfecting the tunes, working on bowings, and developing the musicality.
All campers will self-identify and select their appropriate playing level.  Advanced players will be expected to be able to play the beginner and intermediate tunes as well as their own advanced level in the final concert.  Intermediate players will be expected to play the beginner's tunes as well as their own.  Instructors will provide simple back up lines for the advanced tunes for people who have not had a chance to learn these tunes.  Similarly, back up lines for intermediate tunes will be provided for beginners to play.

Participants will stay in their class rooms and the instructors rotate between classes so every participant will have a chance to learn from every instructor.  There will also be a group orchestra tune and parts for everyone will be provided.  At the final concert, every camper will play on every tune.... either the melody or the simple back up lines.  No one will sit with their fiddles in their laps. We all play together.  The concert will be one of the best camp experiences because of our total involvement.

Acoustic Accompaniment
This year our acoustic accompaniment classes to include banjo and guitar.  Daniel Koulack is returning to teach the banjo classes and Clinton Pelletier will be teaching guitar

The accompaniment classed will focus on a better understanding of chord progressions, playing backup and ways to contribute to the music when you are not playing the melody.
In order to sign up for theses classes, you must be able to play simple major and minor chords on your instrument and be comfortable with chord changes.
